About the Story

What is the story about?

The Adventures of Catriona Allorn is about Catriona and her crew aboard the space freighter Stellar Amaris. The story is what I would categorize as “Sci-Fi Lite”. It’s strictly for entertainment value. I’m not a techie, or science whiz, so please don’t get bent out of shape if the technology or situations these characters are put into are implausible.  The goal is to make the story fun, adventurous, and sometimes even a little campy. We follow Catriona and her crew as they hurtle through a galaxy we haven’t heard of yet, hauling freight that is sometimes stolen or illegal. There are aliens, an evil warlord, rebels, some romance and drama…Hopefully there is something that will appeal to everyone.

This is a character driven story. My intention for the format is that it will be a serial. I’m not writing this story with the idea of chapters in a book, but more along the lines of episodes. While there will be overarching story lines throughout, the episodes are not necessarily going to flow into each other seamlessly. I want to focus more on the adventure, and getting to know the characters, rather than focusing on a beginning, middle and end of a book.

 Who is Catriona Allorn?

The name is really the origin of the story. To me, the name Catriona Allorn had kind of a space alien feel to it, and that’s what started it all. I started thinking about who she would be, and the story just kind of blossomed from there. I’m a big fan of science fiction and fantasy books, movies and TV shows. Once I started thinking about who Catriona was, what her story was, the other characters kind of just showed up.

As I write this, I realize that what I just wrote contradicts what I’m about to write, since honestly, I’m not entirely sure who Catriona is yet. I came up with the character and her background which I started to develop in Episode One. The rest, we will discover together. I have some ideas of who I think she is, and where she’s going, but I’ve found, even in writing just the first episode, that she may not be who I think she is. I’m excited about getting to know her and the crew. I hope you are too.

Why am I writing this?

That’s a deep question. I could probably go on and on about who I am, and how I got to this point, but I don’t think anyone would be that interested in knowing the details of the journey that has brought me here, so I’ll keep it simple.

First and foremost, I love to write. I have neglected my writing over the years, and have realized that I have missed it. The idea of writing a space serial was both exciting and terrifying. I felt like the story of Catriona and her crew had so much potential, I had to try and write it out to see what happens. Ultimately, the excitement of all the possibilities outweighed my fear and reservations.

Second, I’ve always been a reader. I enjoy lots of different genres, but sci-fi and fantasy are favorites. I’m also a huge sci-fi movie and TV fan.  I grew up on re-runs of the original Star Trek series, followed by Space 1999, Battlestar Galactica, Buck Rogers, all the other Star Trek spin-offs… the original Star Wars trilogy, the Star Trek movies and the other sci-fi movies and shows that followed. I guess maybe this serial is kind of my homage to them all.

Extra details (for those of you wanting more information about how all this came about)

The development of the basic story line happened quickly. It was very exciting to think about all the possible adventures these characters could have.  In Writing 101, we all learn a “Golden Rule” – ‘write what you know’.  Well… I’ve always been one to blaze my own trail, so breaking a basic writing rule was not something that would discourage me.

As I stated earlier, I’m no science wizard – in fact, my high school physics teacher, Mr. Holden, begged me not to take physics ever again, and if I did, to be sure not to let anyone know that he had been my teacher. Not exactly a ringing endorsement of my grasp of the basic laws of physics! Of course, once the excitement of writing this story took root, I didn’t let little details like that deter me from developing a story that takes place in space.

Details, details… Well, the saying that ‘the devil is in the details’ is SO true! I soon realized I had little to no real knowledge about basic factors of life in space. This is where a little knowledge about astrophysics, astronautics, basic physics, and astronomy would all come in handy. The good news is that there is Google. The bad news is that there is Google. One of the biggest time suckers and creativity stealers for me is Google. The answers are out there, but I quickly realized, the more I learned, the more there was to learn. To me, Google can be like an addiction, once you start, you can’t stop. You go searching for one thing, which leads you to another, and another, and another…Before I knew it, I found myself bogged down in Google, searching terms like light year, galaxy vs. star system, planetary system, solar system, light speed, and on and on.

HOURS later, when I came out of my Google binge, I realized that if the goal was to write a scientifically accurate (or as accurate as we can be about technology that hasn’t been developed yet) story, I would never be ready to write it. That revelation was a bummer, until it occurred to me that the story I was developing really isn’t about all that. The focus of this story is not about how long it takes to get somewhere in space or what that equates to in light years or light speed or all of those other pesky little details. The story is about the characters – who they are, what they are doing, where they are going, who they are becoming. All of that just happens to take place in space. Once I accepted that, I was ready to write.

So here we are, writer and reader, setting out on a journey together that takes place in space and involves characters that live on a space freighter.  We will be picking up the story of their adventures somewhere in the middle. I expect that we will look back from time to time to see where each of the characters came from, but the real adventure is to find out where they are going. I hope you will enjoy the ride as much as I am!
